Ceramides play a key role in the structure and quality of the stratum corneum. Ceramides are major components of the intercellular lipid matrix, accounting for approximately 40%, and regulate several important biological functions, including the regulation of transepidermal water flow, cohesion of the stratum corneum layers, skin protection and restoration of the skin barrier.
